Task 7 - Describe Physical Properties, Potential and Limitations of Sculptural Materials.

Wire

The wire I used was a solid material but very was bendable so it was easy to form a shape that I wanted to make. However, the wire was also quite weak, so it needed to be reinforced in order to stay attached to another wire without slipping off or coming loose. It is also very hard to keep a shape without one of the sides going loose or loosing shape as just laying the wire down while its in a shape can make it become deformed.

Clay

Clay is a material that is very similar to Play-Doh. It is very easy to bend and mould into whatever shape I want. I could easily make any shape I wanted out of the Clay. However, a limitation to this material is that it is very weak and can easily break off if it is not taken care of properly and left to dry while some parts of the object you have made are very weak. With clay it is much easier to make a 3D bug than it is to do it with the wire or Newspaper and Papier Mache.

Newspaper and Papier Mache

The newspaper and papier mache are 2 very weak materials. They can easily rip if not handled properly. Newspaper can easily be curled into a ball but in order to keep it at that shape, I had to apply masking tape to keep the newspaper together. However, glue would have also worked. A limitation to newspaper is that even if curled into a ball, there will always be pieces of the newspaper that stick out of shape and need to be attached back to shape. Papier Mache is also very easy to rip as it is such a weak and fragile material. I used papier mache with my newspaper to make my 3D model look smoother and keep it attached. Since the papier mache was so slippy, I had to leave it to dry to avoid it falling off.

Overall, I preferred using the clay because it was the easiest to use and easiest to work with. The wire was difficult to work with as opposed to the others as it was harder to bend than the others, and it could hurt the user while bending it. Clay was easier to work with than Wire as it is easier to manipulate and bend and make it stick. The newspaper and papier mache was harder than the others as it was very easy to rip and could easily fall out of place, as opposed to wire and clay.
