Task 8 - Create A Body of Sculptural Samples

These images show all my 3D models that I had made in the given amount of time.

This image shows my Clay Model of my bug. It has the body and the wings and legs that are made out of wire. I also added patterns to the bug so it does not look boring and bland. The clay at first was hard to use but it was very easy to get used to it. In order to actually make the bug I needed to flatten the clay and form the body. Then I used a craft knife to cut out pieces of the bug that I didn't need and to form the body shape of the bug. I then made the wings out of the clay and attached them to the body. In order to do this I used water and a craft knife to make it stick with the body and then dry off so it gets attached. One of the biggest problems I encountered was the fact of the that the clay is so weak that the winds started to break off really easily unless they were supported up.

This image shows a 3D model of one of my bug designs, and it is made out of masking tape and newspaper. In order to make the legs I had to attach wire to the body and then surround the wire with masking tape. This too was difficult as the newspaper kept falling apart. To make the body  I used newspaper and I squashed it into a ball. I then attached masking tape to it to make sure it doesn't unwrap itself and lose its shape. I also had to attach more newspaper to the body as there were holes all over the body. The head was the easiest to make as I just made a small ball out of newspaper, attached a few pieces of masking tape to make sure it stays a circle and used wire to attach it to the body. Overall I found that newspaper was the easiest to use as any mistake was easy to fix and the newspaper was easy to manipulate.

This final image shows a 3D Model I made that is made solely out of just wire. This was the most difficult task as the wire could fall out of place easily if not attached properly and the wire could also very easily injure you. It was also difficult because it was hard to bend the wires appropriately to match that of my actual design and the legs stayed loose so they were easy to detach. I made the body by attaching multiple pieces of wire together. This required me to bend all the wires to form a circular shape and then attach smaller pieces of wire to them to keep the body strong and make sure it doesn't fall apart. I then just attached wire to the body to give the bug arms and legs, although I didn't manage to keep them strong enough to make sure they dont move freely and fall out of place.

Task 7 - Describe Physical Properties, Potential and Limitations of Sculptural Materials.

Wire

The wire I used was a solid material but very was bendable so it was easy to form a shape that I wanted to make. However, the wire was also quite weak, so it needed to be reinforced in order to stay attached to another wire without slipping off or coming loose. It is also very hard to keep a shape without one of the sides going loose or loosing shape as just laying the wire down while its in a shape can make it become deformed.

Clay

Clay is a material that is very similar to Play-Doh. It is very easy to bend and mould into whatever shape I want. I could easily make any shape I wanted out of the Clay. However, a limitation to this material is that it is very weak and can easily break off if it is not taken care of properly and left to dry while some parts of the object you have made are very weak. With clay it is much easier to make a 3D bug than it is to do it with the wire or Newspaper and Papier Mache.

Newspaper and Papier Mache

The newspaper and papier mache are 2 very weak materials. They can easily rip if not handled properly. Newspaper can easily be curled into a ball but in order to keep it at that shape, I had to apply masking tape to keep the newspaper together. However, glue would have also worked. A limitation to newspaper is that even if curled into a ball, there will always be pieces of the newspaper that stick out of shape and need to be attached back to shape. Papier Mache is also very easy to rip as it is such a weak and fragile material. I used papier mache with my newspaper to make my 3D model look smoother and keep it attached. Since the papier mache was so slippy, I had to leave it to dry to avoid it falling off.

Overall, I preferred using the clay because it was the easiest to use and easiest to work with. The wire was difficult to work with as opposed to the others as it was harder to bend than the others, and it could hurt the user while bending it. Clay was easier to work with than Wire as it is easier to manipulate and bend and make it stick. The newspaper and papier mache was harder than the others as it was very easy to rip and could easily fall out of place, as opposed to wire and clay.

Task 6 - Produce Samples of Mini Beasts Design

These images show all my 3D models that I had made in the given amount of time.

Task 4 - A3 Colour Illustration

This image shows my Final 3D Illustration. I have used water colour, ink and oil Pastel to make this final product. The colours of the bug were mainly made using the water colours, but I then used the oil pastel to make the patterns on the bugs wings. I also made the background of the illustration blue and out of water colours so it would go well with the bug and you can still see what the bug looks like. I then decided to outline the bug using Ink so that it is easier to see the actual size of the bug and which area are actually part of the bug. I chose these specific colours for the bug because green is a very neutral colour, so I did not want my bug to look like a predator, but rather a friendly creature. I also chose to use the golden yellow wings to make the bug look better while still looking friendly.

Task 3 - Media & Techniques

Study 1

Study 2

Study 3

These images show three samples of mini beasts design with mixed media.

For my first drawing I used Water Colour and Oil Pastel. To make the patterns I first applied oil pastel to the drawing and then applied water colour on top of the oil pastel so it would be resisted and make the pattern stand out. I chose these colours to make the bug look different to any other bug.

For my second drawing I used water colour and felt tip. First I applied the felt tip and then I applied the water colour to make the drawing look smooth and clean. This mixed media design is good as the bug could easily blend in with foresty environments.

For my third drawing I used oil pastel, oil and a cocktail stick. I used the oil pastel to get the base colour of the bug, and then with the cocktail stick I started scratching away at the bug to give it a better look. Then I applied oil to the design, the oil was used mainly to cover any edges or sides that I missed with the oil pastel so there are no white areas on the bug.

Task 2 - Alternative Design Ideas

These images show my three alternative design ideas. Each design has different parts of bugs mixed together to create new and unique bugs.

My first design idea is made up of multiple different parts of different bugs. It has a big torso, small arms and legs and short antlers.

My second design idea is also made up of different insects. It has the body of a ladybug and arms & legs of a spider. I used this design idea to make two of my 3D models.  I chose this design because I liked the idea of having a bug with a big body, big arms and big legs. I used the body of a ladybug, which is seen as a harmless bug and the arms & legs of a spider, which is seen as a scary creature to many people, and combined them together to form a creature that looks slightly scary while looking harmless at the same time.

The third design idea is the biggest bug, but I did not really like it so I didn't use this in any of my designs. The bug has a really big body and head, but has very small arms and legs, and a small antler.

Task 1 - Secondary Source Images

These images show my second source images, which I used to get certain body parts of the bugs and form a new bug.

I chose this image because I like the way the eyes look. I used the eyes in one of the designs for my bug.

I chose this image because I like the antler and the legs of this bug. I used the legs in one of my bug designs

This is my favorite image because I really like the look and colour of the wings. The wings were used in a design of my bug, a 3D clay model and the final mixed media illustration of my bug.

I chose to use this image of a hornet because I like the shape and colour of the bug. I did not use this in any of my designs but it would have made a good design.

I picked this image because I thought the torso would be a good starting point for a bug design but I ended up now using this in any design or model.

This image of a ladybug looks very good. The torso is very big which is why I chose this image specifically. I used the head and the body for multiple designs, and I used the body for two 3D Models and a design idea.

I also chose an image of a scorpion because I wanted to use the gland in one of my designs. However, I could not find the right design to use the gland or any other part of the scorpion so in the end I never used it.

This final image shows a spider handing from a web. This was the perfect image to choose because you could see everything about the spider. The length of the spiders and the size of the body were very clearly visible here so I ended up using the legs in a design and 3D Models.
